Essential medicines
Definition: Essential medicines are those that satisfy the priority health care needs of the population.
Selection criteria: Essential medicines are selected with due regard to disease prevalence, evidence on efficacy and safety, and comparative cost-effectiveness.
Purpose: Essential medicines are intended to be available within the context of functioning health systems at all times in adequate amounts, in the appropriate dosage forms, with assured quality. Evidently, the word "Essential" does not purport to convey other drugs available in the market are non-essential.

The essential medicine list implies that the drugs included in it are adequate to meet the common contemporary health needs of the general population of the country and general obligation of health administrators to ensure abundant availability of such drugs in the country. The drugs included in the list are generally safe and effective, and approved by the Drugs Controller General, India, and are currently available at affordable prices to the general public. Government of India has revised it's list of essential medicines in 2003 and the same is applicable till date. World Health Organization also addresses to the issue of essential medicines and publishes it,s report regularly.
It has updated it’s list in 2007. Most of the medicines forms the part of both the lists but there are medicines which are present in either of the lists ( table as below) .
